Hong Kong!

For you less geographically blessed people. We will be living on Hong Kong island, right in the thick of things. Drew will be working in Causeway Bay. Last one is a pic of the city itself. All of the skyscrapers are on the coast, and the middle of the island is "mountains."

Big Kirchner Family News!

No, Drew and I are not pregnant. No, we are not getting a second dog to keep Trig company...We are moving to Hong Kong! Drew is getting transferred with his work for a two year assignment, starting sometime in March. We plan on coming back to Denver when the Marvelous Adventure is complete. As Drew and I are list people, I outlined below the reasons we decided to take this Adventure.

Pros:
1. Perfect timing. No kids yet, healthy families, still young enough to rough it.
2. Travel opportunities: China, Japan, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Tibet, Nepal, Indonesia, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and small islands in the South Pacific that have yet to be discovered...
3. Food! My mouth is already watering at the thought of all the amazing dishes we will get to try.
4. Culture! A civilization that has been around for THAT long has a lot of traditions, and we can't wait to learn about them all.
5. Satisfy the "live in a big city" bug.
6. Hong Kong's official languages are Cantonese and English. Should be able to get around well enough.
7. Hong Kong is one of the safest big cities in the world. A fabulous mix of East and West.
8. We'd regret not going one day.

Cons:
1. Missing family and friends. The Kirchner door will be open for any and all visitors!
2. Missing important events in the U.S.: weddings, babies, holidays, etc.
3. Population density. Hong Kong has 7 million people fit in a very small space. At least we will be taller than most :)
4. Heat and humidity. The latitude is similar to Miami's. I'm debating about growing out the Monica fro.
5. Trig will have to become an apartment dog. Lucky for us he never grew over 35 lbs. And yes, we are taking him with us!
6. Air pollution. While Hong Kong is pretty clean compared to a lot of other Chinese cities, it's still worse than the U.S.

We will be leaving this Sat. to go to Hong Kong for a week in hopes of finding an apartment. I will hopefully blog several times while we are over there. And, after the trip, we will have a much better idea of the timing of everything, exactly when we go, when do we need to move out of our house (which we are renting out) etc. The ultimate purpose of this blog is for Drew and I to share our Adventures with you. I plan to make this a consistent thing (unlike Leah on her New Zealand trip...) to discuss not only fun travels but also the day to day stuff. Getting lost on the subway, learning to haggle in a Chinese market, getting homesick... This was a big decision for us; one we did not make lightly. We realize that we will be missing a lot. Two years is a really long time, and also not long at all.

ADVENTURE'S OUT THERE!
